Lesson 1: Begin with exercises Rich designed to cut years off the time needed to become a competent octave player. Adding this style gives a new dimension to your playing and can give a pop tune a jazzy sound.
Lesson 2: This second installment focuses on playing a G major scale with octaves. This may sound easy but don't be fooled. This video illustrates 10 exercises that are the regiment to use to master all the other scales. Rich explains how learning this scale with 3 notes on a string can deliver nuances that make it sound more rhythmically and dynamically interesting. Slurring, which gives octave playing its distinctive quality, is also explained and demonstrated. Follow along with this series to master this technique in record time.
Lesson 3: The next step in studying octaves is playing all the major keys. In this lesson you will play all the major keys by using the modes to learn the fingerings. When playing octaves we have just a little over a two octave range, by using the modes we can see how each key encompasses the entire neck. This approach will also help you better understand modes.
Lesson 4: Rich explores arpeggios with octaves. Arpeggios can be the basis for your improv ideas as they are the "right" or "target" notes. These fourteen exercises cover seventh chord arpeggios as well as extended chords using the upper partials. This is accomplished by superimposing one chord over another which brings the 9ths, 11ths & 13ths. Arpeggios covered are maj7, maj9, maj7#11, maj13, min7, min6, min7b5, min9, min11, min13, dom7, dom9, dom11 & dom13.
